It’s bandied around in the health industry 24/7. Are you balanced? Do you mean on one foot? Because generally I fare better on two. How about just for yoga? Because while I can whip out a pretty sturdy downward dog in my On Form tights, put me in something like Warrior 3 (Virabhadrasana III for those in the know) and I’m a goner!
Take my work life for example. Still in the early stages of a new career, I’m finding juggling those hours with leaving the office at a decent time. Ideally, we wouldn’t be in the office 8.30 to 7pm most days, but that’s what the job currently demands. And don’t get me started on my love life, because it doesn’t exist!
Ask me about my gym routine though and I feel like I’ve got it nailed. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a little guilty of ignoring a rest day here and there, but in terms of enjoyment I’m pretty damn close. I mix up my workouts as much as possible and don’t follow any kind of set plan.
While this sounds like absolute carnage to most, to me it’s the dream. If I’ve had a long day and just want to chill, I’ll take myself to a yoga class or just do some simple foam rolling and mobility. If I’m desperate to bust out some anger, I’ll rock up to a Gibson Girl favourite, 1Rebel for their Rumble or Reshape classes. Both guaranteed to make me sweat and leave me on cloud nine.
After 4 years of sweating it out, I’ve come to learn that [for me] it has to be all about enjoyment. I have to want to work out, I crave that high at the end. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not always smiling mid-burpee but you can guarantee you’ll catch me with a face splittling grin after a good session.
I’m not aiming for killer abs, I’m aiming for a sense of pride. The feeling of “Wow, I actually did that!”
And wine? Let's just say nothing goes down as easier as a cool Pinot Grigio after a stressful day at work. Those after work drinks are vital in helping me balance out those aforementioned office struggles.
